Cultural Adaptability
Jesus is our prime example of cultural adaptability in his dealings with the woman at the well in John 4. With the globalization of the world none of us can afford to get lost in the selfishness of personal preference culture. Unless of course we want to be ineffective in reaching people for Jesus.
Recently I met with an Anglo-American lead pastor who now has some Africans attending his all-white American church. He wanted to know more about their culture and wanted to be better equipped to minister with them. Here is some of the stuff I shared that I wanted to pass on:
1. We need to be more informed – it is amazing how rapidly the world is shrinking–the Internet and travel has absolutely revolutionized our planet. If you have no people of Asian ethnicity in your church you still need to read about Asian culture for it is the biggest culture on the planet. There is no excuse for us as Christian leaders to be uninformed about other cultures because of the availability of books, website, etc. If you want a few suggested books to read drop me an email at kb***@*************ed.com
2. We need to change our language – Since Anglo’s are the dominant culture in America that means we need to take the initiative in being more inclusive for minorities. For example, instead of just quoting from white leaders and preachers, try quoting from leaders and preachers of other ethnic backgrounds. Asking someone to help you be more culturally sensitive is a great way to change your language.
3. We need to be more sensitive to others – The American calendar helps us to do this! Leaders need to find out what Cinco de Mayo day really is – quote from African American historic and religious leaders do every month. If there are Martin Luther celebrations in your community, attend one. A word of wisdom is to always avoid tokenism. That means those of you reading this who are in the majority ethnicity population be proactive in making friendships with minorities which includes inviting them into your home.
I have often said that I understand the racial ignorance of the white man and the anger of the black man but do not agree with either. Somehow we have to embrace one another in true friendship and relationship to demonstrate the love of God in an unbelieving world. Having a correct theology about race is of upmost importance but that is a previous and another blog.
It’s good to be reminded that God’s revelation in Acts 10 to Simon-Peter brought integration! It’s a good idea to pray for revelation.
